Housed in a self-releasing container, a CAT I EPIRB is designed to float free of your vessel should it become submerged. Upon floating to the surface, the beacon will automatically begin transmitting. The EPIRB can also be removed from the housing and manually activated in an emergency.
The CAT II EPIRB is stored bracket located in an easy to access place onboard the boat. The EPIRB is then activated by either placing it in the water or turning on manually.
Personal Locator Beacons use the same distress signaling technology as an EPIRB but are packaged to be easily carried on life vests and immersion suits or in backpacks and ditch bags. PLBs are can only be activated by manually switching them on and do not satisfy any USCG EPIRB carriage requirements.
Designed to be fitted to a lifejacket or immersion suit, the S20 Smartfind AIS MOB device is activated in the event of a man overboard or abandon ship situation. The unit features a high precision GPS and transmits your position and identity via AIS to nearby vessel’s onboard plotter, enabling a fast rescue. The S20 is activated manually but can also be fitted to a Crewsaver ErgoFit PFD to automatically activate when the lifejacket is inflated.
